Self Help

What can I do to help myself?

It's really good for everyone to try and be ‘mentally healthy’. There are some straightforward things that you can do yourself, including:

GETTING A GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP

This helps us recharge our batteries. Although it’s really hard not to sometimes, don’t be on electronics too late, or too close to switching off your light, as it interferes with us going to sleep (blue light from your computer/tablet/phone screen limits the production of melatonin, the hormone needed for sleep).

KEEPING ACTIVE

This helps to release natural hormones to make us feel better. Aim for 30 minutes of exercise a day as a minimum (e.g. fast walking, running or cycling). Yoga and pilates can be good for relaxing your mind as well as being good exercise for your body.

REGULAR TREATS

This might be a trip to the cinema, reading a favourite book, going out with friends or getting your hair done. Try and plan in regular times to do things that you enjoy.

DEVELOP OUR COPING SKILLS

Few people get through life without any stressors. What helps you to manage stress, keep calm and not get overwhelmed? Think about things that make you feel happy and relaxed.
